Nutrition MEAL Officer

Strategic Humanitarian Services (SHUMAS) is a developmental and humanitarian Non-Governmental Organization with main mission being to reduce poverty and empower people to realize the fullest of their potentials, without compromising posterity. SHUMAS is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Nutrition Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning (MEAL) Officer to play a critical role in our Integrated Nutrition and Health Initiative. This position will ensure we are effectively tracking our progress, learning from our experiences, and maximizing our impact on the lives of vulnerable children and communities.

Position: Nutrition MEAL Officer

Location: Logon and Chari Divisions in the Far North Region, Cameroon

Job Summary:

As the Nutrition MEAL Officer, you will be responsible for designing, implementing, and managing the MEAL framework for our Integrated Nutrition and Health Initiative. You will work closely with project staff and community members to collect, analyze, and interpret data, providing valuable insights that inform decision-making and improve program effectiveness.

Key Responsibilities:

1.       Development of ME Framework:

  • Design a robust and comprehensive MEAL framework that aligns seamlessly with project goals and objectives.
  • Develop clear and measurable indicators to track our success in managing SAM cases, preventing malnutrition, promoting proper nutrition practices, and fostering environmental sustainability.
  • Establish reliable baseline data for all key indicators to facilitate effective monitoring and evaluation throughout the entire project lifecycle.

2.       Monitoring Activities:

  • Regularly monitor project activities related to all aspects of the Integrated Nutrition and Health Initiative, including SAM case management, community sensitization, IYCF promotion, vaccination campaigns, deworming efforts, dietary diversity initiatives, mother MUAC training programs, tree-planting activities, and climate change awareness campaigns.
  •  Conduct regular field visits to observe implementation processes firsthand, gather valuable feedback from beneficiaries, and ensure strict adherence to project protocols and quality standards.

3.       Data Collection and Analysis:

  • Develop user-friendly and effective data collection tools, including concise surveys and questionnaires, to gather both qualitative and quantitative data on project activities, outputs, outcomes, and impact.
  • Analyze collected data meticulously to identify trends, successes, challenges, and areas for improvement in project implementation.

4.       Reporting:

  • Prepare timely, accurate, and insightful progress reports that summarize findings from monitoring activities, data analysis, and evaluation efforts.
  • Work closely with the Nutrition Supervisor to present reports to stakeholders during coordination meetings, effectively communicating project progress and impact.

5.       Capacity Building:

  • Provide comprehensive training and ongoing support to project staff and Community Health Workers (CHWs) on ME processes, data collection methods, accurate record-keeping and reporting standards.
  • Foster a strong culture of learning within the project team by actively encouraging the use of ME findings to inform decision-making, refine strategies, and continuously improve program effectiveness.

6.       Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Actively engage with community members to gather valuable insights into their perceptions of project activities and their impact on nutrition outcomes, fostering a sense of ownership and participation.
  • Establish and maintain effective Complaint Feedback Mechanisms (CFM) and ensure that community members are fully informed about how to use them to provide feedback and raise concerns.
  • Diligently follow up on all complaints received through the CFM, ensuring they are addressed promptly, fairly, and with sensitivity.

7.       Commitment to PSEA:

  • Demonstrate a strong and unwavering commitment to preventing Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) in all aspects of your work.
  • Sign a code of conduct, strictly adhere to the organization’s guidelines on PSEA, and actively promote a culture of respect, integrity, and accountability among team members and within the community.

8.       Qualifications and Skills:

 Essential:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Nutrition, Social Sciences, or a related field.
  • Proven experience (minimum 2 years) in monitoring and evaluation of health or nutrition programs, particularly in community settings.
  • Strong analytical skills with proficiency in data analysis software (e.g., SPSS, Excel, STATA).
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Proficiency in the local language is essential for effective communication with community members ( Fulfulde and or Arab)

Desirable:

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience in capacity building and training of staff or community members.
  • Experience with qualitative data collection methods.
  • Familiarity with humanitarian accountability frameworks and complaint response mechanisms.
