Be a champion for child health in the Far North!

Strategic Humanitarian Services (SHUMAS) is a developmental and humanitarian Non-Governmental Organization with main mission being to reduce poverty and empower people to realize the fullest of their potentials, without compromising posterity. SHUMAS is seeking a dedicated and skilled Nutrition Monitor to support our Integrated Nutrition and Health Initiative. Based in Logon and Chari Divisions of the Far North, you will play a vital role in empowering communities to combat malnutrition and build a healthier future for their children.

Position: Nutrition Monitor

Location: Logon and Chari Divisions in the Far North Region, Cameroon

Job Summary:

As the Nutrition Monitor, you will be responsible for ensuring the effective implementation of nutrition-related activities within our Integrated Nutrition and Health Initiative. Working closely with Community Health Workers (CHWs), you will monitor SAM case management, promote proper nutrition practices, support mother-led MUAC screenings, and facilitate community engagement in climate change awareness and tree planting initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

1.       Management of SAM Cases:

•         Monitor the identification, treatment, and follow-up of children with Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) in collaboration with CHWs and local health facilities.

•         Ensure adherence to treatment protocols and conduct regular stocktaking to confirm the availability of necessary resources for managing SAM cases.

•         Collect and analyze data on SAM cases to assess the effectiveness of interventions and identify areas for improvement.

2.       Prevention of Malnutrition:

•         Collaborate with CHWs to conduct engaging and effective community sensitization campaigns focused on Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) practices, vaccination importance, deworming, and dietary diversity for children aged 6-59 months.

•         Assist in developing culturally appropriate and easily understandable educational materials tailored to the local context to promote proper nutrition.

•         Evaluate the impact of sensitization efforts by gathering feedback from community members and CHWs.

•         Facilitate the safe and efficient transportation of malnutrition management equipment to various communities.

•         Ensure proper access for all project actors at the field level, fostering a collaborative and supportive environment.

3.       Training on Mother MUAC:

•         Organize and facilitate interactive training sessions for mothers on how to accurately measure Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) for screening malnutrition in their children.

•         Establish a comprehensive system for tracking follow-ups of children screened by trained mothers, ensuring timely referrals for those identified as malnourished.

•         Provide ongoing support, mentorship, and resources to mothers to enhance their capacity in monitoring their children's nutritional status and promoting community health.

4.       Climate Change Awareness and Tree Planting:

•         Implement dynamic and informative community awareness campaigns regarding climate change and its implications for nutrition and health.

•         Coordinate the safe and timely transportation of trees for planting and the smooth execution of tree planting exercises in various sites.

•         Serve as a trusted liaison between local environmental actors and the management team to ensure proper coordination and collaboration.

•         Commitment to PSEA:

•         Demonstrate a strong personal commitment to preventing Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) in all aspects of your work.

•         Sign a code of conduct, adhere strictly to the organization’s guidelines on PSEA, and actively promote a culture of respect, integrity, and accountability within the team and the community.

5.       Other:

•         Assist the MEAL (Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning) officer with the administration of data collection tools to monitor project progress and impact.

•         Carry out any other assignment given by management to support the overall success of the project.

Qualifications and Skills:

Essential:

•         Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition, Public Health, or a related field.

•         Minimum of 3 years of experience in monitoring nutrition programs, with a strong emphasis on community-based settings.

•         Solid understanding of child nutrition, maternal health, and public health principles.

•         Proven experience working effectively with Community Health Workers (CHWs).

•         Excellent communication skills, with demonstrated mastery of the local language, proficiency in French, and fluency in English.

•         Ability to facilitate effective engagement with community members and the project team.

Desirable:

•         Experience working in the Far North Region of Cameroon.

•         Knowledge of participatory community development approaches.
