Combating Malnutrition: A Joint Mobilization of Health Stakeholders in Kousseri
As part of the health campaign organized in Cameroon’s Far North Region, particularly in the city of Kousseri, by the Kousseri Health District, health stakeholders and partners involved in the fight against malnutrition strengthened their mobilization in support of the most vulnerable children.
From 19 to 26 August 2026, a major joint nutritional care activity was conducted at the Intensive Therapeutic Nutrition Centre (CNTI) of the Maroua Regional Hospital, Kousseri annex. The initiative was carried out with the involvement of the Kousseri Health District, the Regional Delegation of Public Health for the Far North, and partner organizations engaged in the nutrition response.
Strong Mobilization by SHUMAS
In line with its commitment to supporting communities, SHUMAS mobilized all its staff based in Kousseri to actively contribute to the success of the operation.
The main objective was to bring together at the CNTI children receiving care at the various Community Nutrition and Support Centres (CNAS), identify cases of Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM), and strengthen the nutritional monitoring of children requiring specialized care.
Through this mobilization, children accompanied by their mothers and caregivers from several health facilities (FOSA) in Kousseri were brought together at the CNTI to receive appropriate care and improved follow-up.
Health Facilities at the Heart of Community Mobilization
The success of this activity also relied on the involvement of health centre managers and nutrition focal points from the five participating health facilities: Amchidire, Hilé-Haoussa, Pagui, Par-Par, and Madana.
Through community-based awareness and mobilization activities, the teams encouraged mothers and caregivers to bring their children to the CNTI for nutritional assessment and, when necessary, appropriate treatment and care.
More than 500 children received care during this health campaign.
A Collective Response to Protect Children
Beyond this specific activity, the initiative highlights the importance of close coordination between health authorities, healthcare professionals, partner organizations, and communities to sustainably improve the prevention, detection, and management of malnutrition.
Combating malnutrition requires coordinated action, regular monitoring, and continuous support for children and their families. Every child identified, referred, and properly cared for represents another step toward a healthier community.
SHUMAS therefore reaffirms its commitment to supporting the efforts of health authorities and communities in the fight against malnutrition and in promoting equitable access to health and nutrition services.
