MENSTRUAL HYGIENE DAY: SHUMAS RAISES AWARENESS AT PBKC GRADUATION

Over 1,000 persons were reached through a Menstrual Hygiene Awareness Campaign organized by SHUMAS today during the graduation ceremony of Providence Bilingual Kindergarten and Primary School (PBKC) in Bamenda.

The sensitization message focused on the importance of menstrual hygiene management, breaking the stigma surrounding menstruation, promoting access to accurate information, and encouraging community support for girls and women during their menstrual periods. Participants were educated on proper menstrual hygiene practices, the safe use and disposal of sanitary materials, and the need to create an enabling environment where girls can manage their menstruation with dignity and confidence.

The campaign also highlighted the significance of Menstrual Hygiene Day, observed annually on May 28, as a global platform to advocate for good menstrual health and hygiene while addressing challenges such as limited access to menstrual products, inadequate sanitation facilities, and persistent myths and misconceptions about menstruation.

Speaking during the event, SHUMAS representatives emphasized that menstruation is a natural biological process and should never be a reason for discrimination, shame, or exclusion from education and social activities. Parents, teachers, and community members were encouraged to support girls by providing accurate information and promoting open discussions on menstrual health.

The awareness campaign was well received by pupils, parents, teachers, and guests who attended the graduation ceremony. Through this initiative, SHUMAS reaffirmed its commitment to promoting the health, dignity, and rights of women and girls while contributing to the achievement of gender equality and improved educational outcomes.
Today, SHUMAS joins the United Nations to call for collective action from families, schools, community leaders, and development partners to ensure that every girl has access to the knowledge, products, and facilities needed to manage her menstruation safely and confidently.
