Shumas supporting professional education
For over 25 years of existance, SHUMAS has been able to improve access to education in rural and urban poor communities across all ten regions of Cameroon. This has been via; Improving school infrastructure through the construction and rehabilitation of classrooms, equipping of classrooms with benches, tables and chairs and the construction of offices and stores Providing scholarships to underprivileged children at the nursery, primary and higher education levels Inculcating values of environmental management in pupils and students through practical training on organic farming and tree planting techniques and the provision of equipment for school gardens and farms Improving hygiene and sanitation for schools through the provision of potable water, construction of toilet blocks with hand washing facilities. To support professional education, SHUMAS also engaged in the construction and equipping of school science laboratories for qualitative training in secondary and high schools. So far, SHUMAS has constructed and equipped 4 science laboratories for to aid in the teaching of subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Geology. This has been in partnership with Building Schools for Africa (BSFA-UK). The 4 schools that have benefited so far includes; 1. Government Bilingual Secondary School Sodiko GBHS Sodiko is located in Douala IV sub Division, Wouri Division, Littoral Region of Cameroon. SHUMAS and partners constructed and equipped the science laboratory for the school which is presently benefiting the school and other secondary schools around. The project was inaugurated by Senior Divisional Officer for Wouri and later visited by the British High Commissioner to Cameroon and the British Minister for Foreign Affairs. 2. Government Bilingual High School Bekoko GBHS Bekoko located in Dibombari Sub Division in Mungo Division in the Littoral Region is one of the lucky beneficiaries. SHUMAS and partners also constructed and equipped the school Science Laboratory which is not only benefiting students from GBHS Bekoko but 4 other secondary schools in the locality. The Project was inaugurated by the British High Commissioner to Cameroon. 3. Joseph’s Catholic Comprehensive College Big Mankon SAJOCCO is located at Bamenda II sub division, Mezam Division of the North West Region of Cameroon. SHUMAS and partner refurbished and transformed an old classroom into a science laboratory and equipped it with all materials for Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Geology practical. 4. Government Bilingual High School Kimbo The first ever School Science Laboratory constructed and equipped by SHUMAS and partners Building Schools for Africa. GBHS Kimbo is located in Kumbo sub division, Bui Division of the North West Region of Cameroon.
