The vibrant pupils of PS Diche 1 Widikum recently gathered for a vital sensitization session aimed at breaking the silence surrounding Gender-Based Violence (GBV). A total of 69 energetic children including 28 boys and 41 girls aged 9 to 12 engaged in open, age-appropriate discussions about safety, boundaries, and mutual respect. By equipping young learners with knowledge and confidence, SHUMAS is helping to build a generation that refuses to tolerate violence / abuse and is committed to promoting respect, dignity, and equality. This foundational training ensures these young minds can readily recognize harm, look out for their peers, and confidently reject abusive behaviors early in life.
During the interactive session, the children explored the severe consequences of GBV, including traumatic outcomes , unwanted pregnancies and dangerous infections. The discussion also highlighted key factors that promote violence among youths, such as drug abuse, harmful cultural silence, and negative peer pressure. Beyond understanding these dangers, the pupils learned valuable life skills, including self-confidence, decision-making, peer support, and the importance of speaking up. These essential skills empower students to make healthier choices, guard against root causes of abuse, and actively create safer school environments.
A major focus was teaching the pupils the vital importance of safe reporting whenever they encounter or witness any form of abuse. Because teachers, parents, and community leaders play a critical role in protecting children from violence, the session encouraged stronger collaboration between schools, families, and local authorities. This unified network is essential for ensuring that every child grows up in a safe, responsive, and supportive environment. During the discussion, curious pupils eagerly asked, "How can we safely help a friend suffering at home?" and "What should I do if someone threatens me after I report them?"
The enthusiasm and thoughtful questions raised by the pupils demonstrated their eagerness to become advocates for safety and positive change. As these young champions return to their homes and communities, they carry with them an important message: violence is never acceptable. Every child has the right to live, learn, and thrive in safety and dignity, free from fear and intimidation. Through continued awareness and community engagement, SHUMAS and its partners remain committed to creating a future entirely free from Gender-Based Violence.
