On June 23, #SHUMAS joined close to 80 women-led organizations in Buea for a strategic workshop on Gender Transformative Approaches (GTAs). Organized by #WACameroon and #TeenAlive, and facilitated by #UNFPA under the “Eh Woman Eh, Wuna Place dey” project, the event highlighted the importance of addressing root causes of Gender-Based Violence (GBV). The workshop kicked off with interactive role plays that helped participants deeply understand gender definitions and the biases embedded in our daily lives.Participants explored the "gender tree" model, which breaks down gender dynamics into three main components:Root Causes: The deeply held patriarchal beliefs and unequal power structures that fuel inequality.Drivers: The behaviors, traditions, and institutions that perpetuate this inequality.Consequences: The devastating real-world impacts, including Gender-Based Violence (GBV).
Through the socio-ecological model and the Gender Continuum Spectrum, it was made abundantly clear that #GTAs are essential because they actively tackle the root causes of GBV rather than just treating the symptoms.
This impactful capacity-building session took place on International Widows' Day. Many women present were given the floor to share their own lived experiences. The discussion surrounding the Team of the Year "#Justice, #Dignity, and #Economic #Power for Widow" Emphasis was laid on collective resilience and solidarity among women in the face of adversity. A massive highlight of the day was the expert session led by women lawyers and magistrates. They provided invaluable insights into: Defending a widow's rights under the law. Navigating the administrative processes to obtain vital documents and secure inheritance following the death of a husband.
The Buea workshop was an insightful, empowering close to 80 women from diverse backgrounds and statuses. The day concluded with a powerful Call to Action on GTAs, engaging all Women-led organizations present to translate their newfound knowledge into tangible, protective measures within their respective communities and organizations.
